I Don’t Always Use Fondant…

But when I do, I make my own.

Truth be told I hate fondant. I think I’ve mentioned this before. I just don’t get why you would cover up a cake with something that tastes awful. It’s a waste. I love watching people pull fondant off the cake and chuck it in the garbage. This is how I also feel about restaurants leaving the tail on shrimp (except for shrimp cocktail). There is no polite way to rip the tail off especially when it’s drenched in a butter sauce. Help me out here, people.

Unfortunately, some things I just can’t do with buttercream. So in walks marshmallow fondant. Still doesn’t taste great, however, it’s cheap to make and you really can do WHATEVER you want with it.

I did some cupcakes for birthday parties and used my own homemade fondant. It’s really a trial and error process, especially the coloring of the fondant. Since I’ve only made and used it a few times, I’m pretty proud of the results.

The pictures above are from the cupcakes I did for a PJ Masks birthday party. Since I don’t have kids, I totally had to google what the heck PJ Masks was. As you can see, fondant in this case works so much better than buttercream.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse cupcakes.

This was the first time I used marshmallow fondant. I frosted with buttercream and used the paper towel technique to get the buttercream as smooth as possible. Then I adorned it with colored fondant circles. This was for a gender reveal party and the inside frosting was pink. There was also a little banner that said “He or she, open and see”. I had so much fun doing this cake. It’s a little exhilarating being one of the few people who know a huge secret!

All in all, I’ve overcome my fears of fondant. However, I don’t think I’ll be covering a cake in it anytime soon!

So enjoying these reads. Unfamiliar with the ‘paper towel’ method for smoothing. I’ll read up. Never had fondant, but its makeup sounds most unappealing.. seems like marzipan could be sheeted AND eaten!!??

Viva brand paper towels have a flat side which helps to smooth out the buttercream. There are a ton of tutorials out there. I was skeptical at first but it really does work!
